Why do I need this test?
Your doctor may recommend Holter monitoring if you experience:
Unexplained fainting or dizziness
Palpitations or a racing heart
Irregular heartbeats not caught on a standard ECG
Chest pain not linked to physical activity
Monitoring of known arrhythmias or after medication changes
Assessment of pacemaker or heart function over time
What happens during the test?
Here’s what to expect with Holter monitoring:
Small electrodes (stickers) are placed on your chest
Wires connect the electrodes to a compact recorder worn on a belt or shoulder strap
You’ll be asked to continue your usual daily activities and keep a symptom diary
If you feel symptoms like dizziness or palpitations, note the time so it can be matched with the recording
After 24–48 hours, you’ll return the device for analysis
The test is painless and does not interfere with most normal routines.
What might I feel?
Mild skin irritation from the adhesive pads
Slight inconvenience wearing the monitor while sleeping or changing clothes
You may feel self-conscious, but the device is small, silent, and easy to hide under clothing
Most people forget they’re even wearing it after a while.
What happens after the test?
Your doctor will review the recorded data along with your symptom diary
The test can detect arrhythmias, pauses, rapid or slow heartbeats, and other electrical abnormalities
Based on the results, your doctor may recommend:
Lifestyle changes or medications
Further testing (like an event monitor or stress test)
In some cases, pacemaker or ablation therapy
